Funny
Does his best to make dry material interesting
Baldwin is a pretty good professor. He drops your lowest paper grade and gives more weight your highest exam and paper grades. Going to class is a must or you will miss a great deal of testable material, but keeping up with the reading is also mandatory to do well on his exam essay questions. The material was dry and sometimes boring (at least to me) but he does his best to inject some humor into his slideshows. Also, don't play with your cell phone in his class, especially if you don't go to class often, as he will get angry with you and call you out on it and ask you to leave the class.

STUDENT WHO HAD HIM TWICE:
Some of the evals for this prof are so ridiculous.
The WORST thing about Baldwin is...drum roll...he expects you to do work!!! OH MY GOD who woulda thought such a thing would happen.
He has realistic expectations and he makes it so EASY to get at least an A- in his class. He gives several quizzes, essays, etc and at the end of the course he chooses your highest grades in each category. So if you get a C on a quiz, get an A on the next one and itll cancel it out. He is amusing with his jokes about history, he is passionate about the subject matter, and he is very willing to help you. When you write a crappy essay HE WILL TELL YOU IT WAS CRAP, you should be HAPPY he does it. He will help you improve immensely in writing essays. I took him for Historians Craft, after that class my essay grades were all A's and a few Bs. I thank him for that. I also took him for American History class about urbanization. Great class, great professor. Take him. I plan on taking him for my last semester of senior year.

To the person who said all you have to do is read the books and never go to class, WRONG. What did you get a D in the end? You do have to go to class. You can miss a few sure if you really need to take a day off, he is pretty understanding. But skipping all the time is a bad idea. You will miss important stuff and make a bad impression on a guy who is nice to his dedicated students. He is great professor.

Cons: Professor is boring or bland
Confusing or hard to understand
Expectations are unclear or lofty
Overly difficult tests or assignments
I've never had a class where the subject matter bored me so much that I began falling asleep. Stay away from this subject it's pretty boring, and his classes are pointless. Read the books, and you should be fine without attending class.

Cons: Is a bad professor
Professor is boring or bland
Expectations are unclear or lofty
The truth about Baldwin is that his lectures can be boring, and his directions on what he expects you to do for essays can be a bit confusing. Overall, the essay assignments suck, however you can choose to do 2 or 3 essays. He gives you IDs and essays to prepare before the exam which is extremely helpful. I'd say the worst thing about his class is.. listening to his libral opinions (which he imposses on you) and having to sit through mainly pointless lectures.

Cons: Needs to involve students in class discussions
His class isn't that bad. I discovered I didn't really have to do the readings. The papers (2) are a bit long (5-6 pags) but they were graded easily. Mid-term and final not bad either. He sometimes talks really fast and tries to be funny when he's not, but you'll get the occassional chuckle.
