It’s the most wonderful time of the year — yes, Christmastime! We’re nearing the middle of the month which means Christmas is approaching and fast! This time of year is great for spending time with family, baking all sorts of delicious holiday cookies, and gift-giving! Of course, gift-giving isn’t the most important reason for the season, but it is a huge part of it, which often stresses many people out (including myself). There are so many people to give gifts to and all sorts of different kinds of gifts to give, leaving you scrambling to figure out what to give to who, especially your roommate.

The relationship you have with your roommate is such a special one- you have a space together, respect each other’s space, and share a bond unlike anyone else. Around the holiday season, it can be easy to go crazy on gifts for everyone and neglect your roommate, but there are plenty of gifts that to give that will make them smile.

As we get older, materialistic gifts don’t hold as much value, whereas ones that can help us in our day to day living do. Instead of opting for something that your roommate might not be able to use every day, these five apartment-related gifts will make their lives easier and make you quite possibly the best roommate ever!

1. Matching Wine Glasses: As college students, life can get stressful. Sometimes after a long day, a nice glass of wine just does the perfect trick to take the edge off. College students are also known to not have the best dining ware or glasses. There always seems to be a mix-match of different sizes, shapes, and colored dining ware, which is totally cool, but its also cool to match too! A perfect gift for your roommate is a pair of matching wine glasses. You and your roommate can share these together or even use these to entertain guests when they come over! Get this set on Amazon for $30!

2. Cookbook: Another thing college students are notorious for is not knowing how to cook or prepare proper meals. Sometimes time just occupies too much of the day and it’s easier to get something fast. Maybe your roommate wants to learn how to cook, dedicate more time to preparing better meals, or simply wants to experiment with different recipes. Regardless, a cookbook is an awesome present to gift to your roommate.

There are so many different ones out there! For a Bob’s Burgers fan, The Bob’s Burgers Burger Book is a fun choice, a book totally dedicated to different ways to prepare burgers with fun quotes and pictures from the show. Perhaps your roommate loves Queer Eye or is strictly obsessed with Antoni (in that case, me too)- Antoni in the Kitchen features a bunch of different and delicious recipes all crafted by Antoni himself. Dig deep into your roomie’s interests and find the perfect cookbook for them!

3. Coffee Press/Maker: College students run on coffee, I think we all can attest to this. Especially with the spring semester coming up and academics getting tougher, coffee is a necessity in order to function, so why not gift your roommate a coffee press or coffee maker! Perhaps their coffee maker is old and needs replacing or they just don’t have one, a coffee press/maker is a great gift for roommates. They’re inexpensive, useful and last awhile! Keurig is also a great option for a roommate that is always on the run and needs coffee quick! With all of the different varieties of coffee, you can put together a fun gift pack for your roommate to try!

4. A Set of String Lights: When the day is over and the homework/studying is done, everyone likes to unwind and destress. A set (or two) of string lights will help to make your roommate’s room extra calming and cozy. You can get these lights in an assortment of shapes and colors; I have a couple sets in my room that are in the shape of stars and pink! String lights are an inexpensive gift to give your roommate and they’ll definitely appreciate the sparkle the lights give.

5. Homesick Candle: Everyone gets a little homesick once in a while. For your roommate that isn’t in their home state anymore, Homesick Candles give a little slice (or smell) of home to help heal those homesick blues. What better Christmas gift to give to someone than a piece of home when they are far away? The Homesick Candle company currently has a candle for every state as well as multiple different cities throughout the country. Even some countries too! Their smell will bring your roommate right back to the place they know and love.

Some people truly don’t get excited to do yearly holiday shopping, whether it’s due to the fact that there’s a lot of money spending, or crazed people, or the overall stress of it. A lot of people think that the holiday season is all about the number of gifts that you give, but its truly about the quality and the thought that goes into the gift you’re giving to your roommate. Regardless of what you give them, it’s the thought and intention that counts!
