Fashion trends come and go, and so do home decor trends. What may have worked this time last year, may look a little outdated this time around. Give your living space a much-needed refresh when you ditch these decor trends this year. New season, new room, right?

Mirrored furniture

The decor trend originated from its ability to give a space a luxurious feel. Tables and cabinets were made of mirrored surfaces rather than a more traditional wood finish. Well, those same surfaces could make your room seem more cluttered than it is, as it reflects whatever is around it.

Minimalism

Minimalism is not just a decor trend for some, but a lifestyle. If you are the type to limit the number of belongings in your life and aren’t the type to collect things just for the sake of having them, ditching this “trend” may not be the best idea for you.  But, if you were going for a minimalist look just for the sake of following a decor trend, why not decorate to your heart’s content?

Don’t be afraid to add personal touches to your living space. From adding a collage photo wall to showcase photos of your family and friends, to adding a bunch of decorations to reflect an upcoming holiday, make your space personal and claim it as your own.

Ditching minimalism doesn’t just mean adding useless clutter to your space, but not being afraid to embrace colors and patterns. Add a splash of color via your bedding or pillows, or paint a wall (if you are allowed to, of course).

Industrial lighting

Industrial lighting, which is most commonly seen in home decor as exposed light bulbs, is a trend that many are looking to ditch this year. While it can add a cozy feel to your living space if used right, it can also hold you back from using lighting to further decorate your living space.

Lighting can add plenty of personality to your space. From the metal or wood of the lamp base, or the details of the shade you end up picking (pattern, fabric, color), you can add flair to your living space through your lighting. Playing with the shape and sizes that lighting comes in can also help personalize your space — much more than a single exposed lightbulb could.

Fake plants

Yes, we know, not everyone is born with a green thumb – or the ability to take care of a living plant. Fake plants may be the best sounding alternative when you lack gardening expertise, but it’s a decor trend to ditch.

Fake plants tend to look exactly what they are, which is fake. They don’t nearly have the same gloss on their leaves or vibrant colors that a real plant would offer. They often lose their vibrancy over time just to natural dulling or by getting dusty more quickly.

Fake plants also do not give you the same air-purifying benefit that plenty of real houseplants do. And, swapping out a fake plant for a real one gives you the chance to learn a new hobby.

Try your hand at gardening – ask a worker at your local gardening center for some advice. Tell them about the lighting in the space you are looking to put them in, your previous experience with plants, and they can recommend you a plant. A houseplant like pothos is simple even for the least experienced gardeners.

Fringe

While minimal is a decor trend that many want to see end, that doesn’t mean designers recommend just about any type of texture to your space. Fringe is one of the many trends that can see ending soon. And what may already have fringe you ask?

Common decor items like throw blankets, rugs, and pillows often come with fringe — even some wall art showcases the fringe trend. Change out your fringe for something more simple, yet still decorative. Something like a knitted texture for a rug or throw blanket can make your room super cozy, just in time for colder weather during fall and winter.

Shag carpet

Just as fringed carpets are becoming a thing of the past,  shag carpets are as well. While they may feel beautifully comfortable under your feet, they aren’t as stylish and functional as we would want them to be. For one, vacuuming them can be a complete chore when you have to constantly watch out for the vacuum snagging the carpet. And if you have a furry pet like a cat or dog? Getting all their fur out of the carpet is a complete hassle.

Functional use aside, shag carpets are just a style of the past. You don’t need the added texture on the floor. Swap out your shag carpet for a low-pile carpet for a more clean and modern look in your living room, and you won’t be missing the tedious task of keeping your old shag carpet clean as well.

Ditching some of these decor trends doesn’t have to leave your space and wallet bare, but can be done in small steps to ensure a fresh space with your budget intact. Don’t worry about changing out everything that isn’t “trending,” but make changes that leave you satisfied and happy in your living space.
