5 Fun Things To Do On Campus This Fall

By Alicia Geigel on August 27, 2018

Even though we are currently in the fiery summer month of August, fall scents, apparel and foods are already being displayed everywhere the eye can see, and I could not be more excited! There is nothing like the overall feeling of fall: the hues of red, orange and yellow in nature, the sound of the leaves crunching beneath your feet, the chilling breeze that makes you grab a sweatshirt, and the smells, oh the wonderful smells of fall.

Fall is quickly approaching but, for those of you like me who do not exactly want to wait until early October to get your fall on, there are a bunch of ways that you can get the fall experience before the season actually comes to campus!

1. Tailgate: College sports bring students together like nothing I’ve ever seen before. There’s something so amazing about everyone coming together and being united to cheer on their school’s sports team and mascot during a game. Tailgating is such a fun way to get back into the school spirit this fall.

The homecoming game (and homecoming week in general) is especially a great event to take part in and tailgate for! Gather up a bunch of friends, bring a variety of yummy foods (my favorites are Buffalo Chicken DipChili, and Nachos) with some icy, cold drinks and lastly, some prideful school gear to not only show your love for your team, but also have a blast with friends!

2. Dorm-Friendly Bonfire: Don’t be scared, RAs! I’m not suggesting any form of fires being lit inside any school building. When on campus depending where you are, having a bonfire outside isn’t always possible. Perhaps you go to a college in an urban area, or maybe there just isn’t an appropriate space to have one where you go to school.

Bonfires are a great part of celebrating the fall, but just because you can’t have one outside, doesn’t mean you can’t create the feeling of one inside! To imitate the same feeling of a bonfire, gather close by a space heater or wherever you can get that nice, instant warmth totally works. Lay down some blankets, pillows and gather up some of your favorite snacks for a fun time playing games or reading a book. You could even make s’mores on the stovetop or in the microwave and eat them by the space heater for the ultimate bonfire feeling! Nothing says cozy like this, and if you try it, can you invite me too?

3. Indoor Movie Day: Remember when we were kids and made blanket forts for just about every occasion? Now that I think of it, for me it was more of a daily ritual than for something special, oh well! For this, gather up any blankets you can find in your dorm or apartment, preferably larger ones because they make for better forts and get to building a fort! You can use chairs, pillows, just about anything to hold up your blankets.

After you are done assembling your fort, pop some popcorn and collect some of your favorite candy or cookies to bring into your new layer. Now that you have everything set up, pick out a movie that you have been wanting to see and turn it on! Not only does this give you that fun movie theater feeling, but it also gives you that great feeling of nostalgia, bringing you right back to when you were a kid. What could be more fun during these upcoming chilly months?

4. Plan a Halloween Party: One of my favorite things about fall is Halloween. The spooky decorations, the mountains of candy, the fun costumes, and the scary movies- how can you not love it?! A small Halloween party on campus is a super fun way to get to know classmates/people on your floor and make new friends!

To host a small party in your dorm or apartment, start by decorating with some inexpensive pumpkins, cotton cobwebs, and glow-in-the-dark lights to give it that spooky feeling. Then find some fun, Halloween-themed snacks to make for your friends, I love ones like Hot Dog Mummies, Halloween Harvest Mix and Vampire Teeth Cookies! Lastly, find a spunky Spotify playlist that has all of the greatest Halloween hits to keep everyone dancing through the night!

5. Go on an Adventure Off Campus: Sometimes we all need a break from being on campus. One fun way to still enjoy the company of your college friends but be away from school is to go on an off-campus trip to an orchard! Going to an orchard is just one of the best activities you can do during the fall with friends.

There’s the awesome hay rides, the crisp taste of apple cider, the warm and delicious cider doughnuts, and the thrill of finding a pumpkin the size of your head! Not only will you enjoy the trip away from campus, but you’ll also get some great pictures and memories that will last forever!

Do you feel ready for fall yet? These five simple and fun ways to embrace fall while on campus will make this semester unforgettable, I promise! So put on your flannel, sit back on the couch with some friends, sip some warm apple cider, and welcome fall with open arms. As always, good luck!
