Top 10 College Essentials for Girls

By Elizabeth Hilfrank on September 27, 2017

When moving into college it can seem like your packing list goes on and on. While you’re preparing for the move, make sure you have these 10 essentials amongst the piles.

1. Water Bottle – I cannot stress this enough. Staying hydrated is always important, especially when you start your day with coffee as most college students do. Even more so, drinking water in class gives you something to do when the lectures get long. Studies also show that if you feel tired, more often than not it’s because you are dehydrated, so, drink up!

The Camelback style is great for class because it is quiet when you slurp. Conversely, if your college is in a hot climate, try the vacuum insulated style to keep your water nice and cool.

2. Backpack – Walking around campus gets hard when carrying your books in your arms. A backpack will actually make you look cooler to have it than to not. So, come prepared with something that will protect your notebooks from rain, wind and anything else that may come their way.

3. Scooters – This one may seem strange, but two of my roommates just bought their scooters, and the benefit has been more than I could have imagined. Not only are they good entertainers at get-togethers, but they are also super functional. My roommates scoot to buy food late at night as well as to various meetings.

At my birthday party last weekend, people ended up scooting all around the apartment. Living at the far end of campus, the scooting cuts travel time by half. My freshman year a fellow first-year scooted around campus and became known as “scooter girl.” So, you can even become a legend on your campus if you buy one. It’s good exercise, too! But harder than you think, so watch out.

4. Laptop Case – If your backpack does not have a protective laptop sleeve built into it, then make sure you buy a laptop case. You will have a lot of work to do online in college, so it is important that your machine does not get damaged.

5. Coffee Maker – I left my coffee maker at home at the beginning of the semester thinking that I would lessen my coffee intake, but I could not have made a bigger mistake. Making your own coffee in the morning will keep costs down and it is a nice way to start your day, even if you think it may just be a placebo effect. Just the smell of it gets me going in the morning.

6. Headphones – I am wearing my headphones as I write this article. No matter where you work on campus, there will be either lots of background noise or none at all, making it awkwardly silent. I never knew how much music helped me to focus until I got to school. Also, a lot of people on my campus listen to music while walking to class. Sometimes it is nice to be in your own little world and step away from the chaos that surrounds you.

7. Adhesive Hooks – There are a lot of different types of these, and different ones are better for some things than others. Nonetheless, you should come to college prepared with a lot of them. At my school, you will be fined at the end of the semester if you damage the walls. So, avoid this by planning ahead. Additionally, these hooks are necessary to hang any decorations. I use them to hang my calendar, for a spot to hold my keys, my bath towels, and a picture collage.

8. Water Filter –A lot of colleges have been around for a while, which means their pipes are pretty old, making the water taste a little funky. Avoid stomach pain and just weird tastes in general by purchasing a water filter. My apartment has one that latches onto our faucet, which makes it super easy.

9. Lights – Lamps, Christmas lights, party lights, they are all good. Most college lighting is fluorescent and pretty harsh, so my apartment prefers to not turn on these lights and just rely on the lighting we bring. Doing this will bring a more ~zen~ vibe to your apartment, and it will ease any stress you may have.

10. Sewing Kit – I don’t have one, but my roommate does, and I utilize her sewing skills often. You don’t want to be caught in a pinch when you have to wear a skirt to a job fair, but the waistband rips. Additionally, all of my shirts rip in the armpit hole. I don’t want to live my life with my arms pinned to my sides, therefore the sewing kit is very necessary.

These 10 things are essential items I wish I had known to bring my first year at college, and things I still regret not having now. So, don’t be me and pack them up! They are just a few products that will make your college experience that much better.
