The Hottest Social Event In The World
Tonight, as the sun sets on Manhattan, hundreds of fashion designers, singers, movie stars, athletes, socialites, artists, writers, models, etc. will descend upon New York City for what is, beyond a shadow of a doubt, the most glamorous social event of the year, every year. Hell, even Michelle Obama went last year.
The Grammy Awards? Psh. The Emmys? Save your breath. The Oscars couldn’t even hold a candle to what goes down every year on the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art each May.
That’s right folks – I’m talking about the Met Gala.
Every single year, professional bitch and Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour invites a bunch of famous people and their cliques to New York for the annual Met Gala (or, if you wanna get all technical and shit, the Costume Institute Gala) so that they can wear designer clothes and have their pictures taken for a Vogue editorial the next morning raise money for a fundraiser and, in the years since, it’s actually been really successful. In 2014, these famous people raised a record $12 million so that the Costume Institute can stay in business.
What’s fun about the Met Ball is that every year there’s a theme with a pretentious name. In 2012, it was Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations and 2013 was dubbed Punk: Chaos to Couture. Last year served as an homage to “America’s First Couturier,” Charles James. And for 2015 – drumroll please – get ready as the Met Gala hosts… China: Through the Looking Glass.
Why do I have a feeling there’s going to be a ton of headlines Tuesday morning reading something along the lines of, “Sarah Jessica Parker Shows Up to Met Gala in Geisha-inspired Tunic With Her Hair Tied Up in Chopsticks: Is This Cultural Appropriation?”
In all honesty, guys, I’m really excited about the Met Gala tonight, what with all the stars and amazing fashion, so at this point in time, I’m going to take us all through a trip down memory lane with some of the best looks from Met Galas past:
Ashley Olsen in Dior, 2011
Erykah Badu in Givenchy, 2014
Florence Welch in Alexander McQueen, 2012
Lupita Nyong’o in Prada, 2014
Miley Cyrus in Marc Jacobs, 2013
Kim Kardashian (with BD Kanye West) in Givenchy, 2013
Sarah Jessica Parker in Alexander McQueen, 2014
Sarah Jessica Parker in Alexander McQueen, 2013
Madonna in Givenchy, 2013
Daphne Guinness in Alexander McQueen, 2011
Marc Jacobs in Comme des Garcons, 2012
Last but not least, the hostess of the evening herself, Anna Wintour in Chanel, 2008
There you have it. These pictures prove that scoring an invite to the Met Gala is basically life’s way of saying you’ve finally made something of yourself.
One last thing – word on the street is that Ms. Wintour has banned all selfies from the gala this year. Sorry, Kim.
